Hanger Strength Testing
During the design process, I needed to figure out what blend of plastics would work best for these hangers. I needed a plastic that was strong and durable yet cost efficient. I personally build this testing rig to test the tensile strength of different plastic blends. The test rig was able to consistently pull the hangers with a equal amount force and measure how much weight was exerted.
I instructed our factory to mold me 6 of the same style hangers but all with slightly varying ratios of ABS plastic and HIPS plastic. I tested 100% ABS, 75% ABS 25% HIPS, 50% ABS 50% HIPS, 25% ABS 75% HIPS and 100% HIPS plastic.
I found that the best result came from the 100% ABS hanger. Due to cost restraints 100% abs was out of the picture. We ended up going forward with 80% ABS and 20% HIPS as the final plastic blend, as it satisfied our cost requirements and had better strength then competitors hangers I tested.
